In brief

NRIs with supported NRE/NRO accounts can use eligible overseas mobile numbers for UPI. A listed country does not make every bank or app compatible. Match all three against NPCI’s list, then confirm onboarding with your bank. This is different from paying an overseas merchant using UPI International.

Your next steps

0 of 5 steps complete · Next: Check the three-way match

  1. Prepare the registered phone

Ensure the same overseas number is registered with the bank. Ask whether outbound verification SMS, roaming, the SIM in the device and device binding are required. Keep a backup payment method.

  2. Onboard through the official app

Install through a trusted app store or the bank’s official link. Follow the app’s account-discovery and UPI PIN process. Never tell a caller your PIN or OTP.

  3. Test before the trip

Make a small authorised payment, confirm the payee and retain the reference. Ask the bank about limits and blocked transaction types.

  4. Resolve a failure at the right point

If the account is not discovered, verify mobile/KYC details with the bank; if registration or SMS fails, check app/SIM requirements. For a debit without completion, keep the UPI reference and raise an in-app/bank dispute.
