Australia · Crisis management
Know what to check. Know who to call.
Plan how to manage family, work, travel and responsibilities in India when normal routines are disrupted.
Use your local emergency number and the authority responsible for your location. Follow current official instructions. This page is preparation guidance, not an emergency response service or an all-clear.

For Australia: Use your state or territory emergency service for immediate warnings. A disaster declaration does not establish your personal benefit eligibility.
Your six-part crisis plan

01Safety & family
Act on the alert issued for your exact location.
- 1
Check the instruction
Read the local authority’s message, its issue time and the area it covers. If there is immediate danger, contact local emergency services.
- 2
Follow the directed action
Use the shelter, evacuation or movement instruction actually issued. Do not set off towards an airport or border because of an unverified message.
- 3
Account for your household
Agree a check-in person, an out-of-area contact and arrangements for anyone who needs help. Keep medicines, essential supplies and accessible document copies ready.
02Work & income
Get the operating plan from your employer before making assumptions.
- 1
Contact your manager or crisis team
Ask whether to attend, work remotely, relocate or remain available, and which official instruction the decision follows.
- 2
Confirm the practical terms
Ask about pay, leave, working from another country, equipment, insurance and safe access. Keep written confirmation; this page does not determine employment rights.
- 3
Protect essential access
Keep HR, payroll and benefits contacts available offline. Use the relevant labour authority or a qualified adviser for an unresolved employment problem.
03Travel & documents
A ticket, an open airport and permission to enter are separate checks.
- 1
Check the whole journey
Check the operating airline, departure and arrival airports, connections, border authority and Indian-mission notices. Recheck before departure.
- 2
Confirm each traveller’s documents
Check passport, visa or residence status, transit permission and documents for children with the responsible authorities. Do not assume an emergency extension or entry concession exists.
- 3
Prepare for cancellation or disruption
Ask the airline about your actual booking and the insurer about exclusions and claim evidence. Keep receipts. Do not pay an unofficial agent promising evacuation access.
04Children & education
School transport, attendance and examination decisions may come from different organisations.
- 1
Contact the school directly
Confirm opening, collection arrangements, authorised adults, transport and the next update time. Agree how you will be contacted if mobile service is interrupted.
- 2
Check the correct regulator and exam board
A school notice does not necessarily decide external examinations. Check the board or awarding body for your child’s curriculum and examination centre.
- 3
Plan for interrupted schooling
Keep school contacts and assignments available offline where possible. Tell the school about access problems. Check attendance and examination consequences before moving a child overseas.
05Embassy & consulate
Use the Indian mission responsible for your location.
- 1
Find the official mission
Use the Government of India mission directory. Read current notices and the dedicated emergency-contact page on the mission website.
- 2
Use the specified assistance route
If the mission asks for registration, use its official form and keep the reference. Ask about lost documents or a person needing assistance through the published channel.
- 3
Keep expectations realistic
Registration does not guarantee evacuation, transport, a visa or reimbursement. Read eligibility and the latest instructions; never treat an old repatriation notice as an open booking window.
06Manage your responsibilities in India
Prepare for disruption while you are in Australia.
- 1
Nominate a trusted family contact
Agree a check-in routine with parents or relatives in India. Give them the current mission and employer contact routes, without sharing passwords or OTPs.
- 2
List time-sensitive commitments
Review care, medicines, property payments, insurance and known filing dates. Arrange lawful, documented assistance where needed. A crisis does not automatically suspend a deadline.
- 3
Keep records of any change of plan
Record unexpected travel days, additional costs and service interruptions. Ask your CA, lawyer, bank or insurer how the actual facts affect your situation.
