Scope & limits Sources checked 14 Oct 2026

Adviser-confirmed cash-distribution scenarios. RNOR status needs to be assessed; it does not automatically make a withdrawal tax-free. No automatic treaty, vesting or exit-tax determination.

Informational estimate. Official sources checked; not professionally reviewed.

Your assumptionsStep 1 of 3
1Classify the pension and the case
2Source-country cash and tax, in that country’s currency
3India and the net transfer
Compare pension actions over the same horizon

All future tax percentages below are confirmed combined effective burdens after available credits. They do not come from an automatic treaty calculation. Retained accounts and transfers are assets, not spending cash.

Unresolved assumptions must be checked before acting. No financial figures are sent through these controls.

Examples use fictional figures.

How to read this result

  1. Compare the cash you receive now with what remains after estimated taxes, charges and any confirmed tax relief.
  2. Tax withheld when money is paid out may differ from the final tax due. Withdrawal rules vary by country and pension.
  3. Check withdrawal dates and tax treatment in both countries before taking or moving money.
Calculation details and sources

US 401(k): early distributions can attract an additional 10% on the taxable part before 59½, subject to plan-specific exceptions. Withholding differs for US persons, non-residents and eligible rollovers. Withholding is not final US liability. Covered-expatriate / long-term green-card exit rules need separate advice.

Canada RRSP: non-resident withholding is generally 25% unless a treaty changes treatment; periodic pensions and lump sums can differ. Section 217 elections, refund rights and provincial / residency effects need review. A cash withdrawal is not automatically a departure-tax event.

UK pensions: the usual tax-free cash limit is subject to the remaining lump-sum allowance, commonly £268,275, and protections / prior use. UK tax-free treatment is not automatically Indian exemption. Emergency PAYE, government pensions, temporary non-residence and overseas-transfer charges need separate review.

For India, confirm NR / RNOR / ROR, first receipt, past taxable accruals, contributions / cost basis, services history and treaty treatment. The USA, UK, Canada and Australia are notified countries in the current Form 40 guidance; account / resident eligibility and the continuing election still require confirmation. Eligible section 158 / Rule 74 / Form 40 deferral replaces the legacy section 89A route in the new framework. It changes timing, not blanket taxability.

This calculator cannot compute unvested benefits, RSUs, covered-expatriate exit tax, cross-border pension transfers / QROPS, employer guarantees or disputed treaty residence. Those cases are blocked until separately resolved. Enter only vested, confirmed withdrawal amounts.

Foreign tax credit uses eligible final covered tax, not automatically withholding or early-withdrawal penalties. Enter a confirmed credit cap in INR, or zero if no Indian credit is available. Currency conversion uses your cash-transfer assumption here, so a filing computation may differ.
